Someone felt the need to send a 'getting to know you' forward to a fic list I'm on. This is taken from one woman's response:
IF YOU HAVE A TATTOO, WHAT IS IT AND WHERE IS IT AT?
Not that I don't like them, but I would never do that. It sends a message about the wearer they don't realize is negative.
I have a tattoo. It's on my left arm, it's fairly large, and it's visible if I am wearing cap sleeves or a tank top. It's inked in black, so if I have on a white or really light sleeved shirt, you can see it through the fabric.
I know exactly what it says about me and if it makes people uncomfortable, tough shit.
It's an immediate litmus test. If people cop an attitude with adults having themselves tattooed, I don't need to bother with them. If someone is narrow enough to be offended by ink embedded under my skin, I can think of a dozen even more offensive things about me.
Of course, this is the woman who dislikes fic recs being posted because 'it hurts the feelings of the authors who aren't rec'd'. She also feels that readers owe fic writers feedback.
People don't owe me shit. I write because I enjoy it.
If you need gratification that badly, buy a vibrator.

The gall of some people.
a)you don't WEAR a tattoo. It isn't clothing and you can't take it off. Much like hair or an arm or a spleen.
b)fuck her. I have two tattoos and I think I'm smart enough to realize what messages they send and equally smart enough to not give a fuck if people think I'm a hussy or whatever.
These are probably the kind of people who assume that if you're tattooed you must be somebody who fell off a turnip truck or you knife people in dark alleys for fun (not that there's anything wrong with either of those things given context).
As for recs and feedback...nobody owes anybody anything.
Want me to go in with you on a vibrator for this poor deluded soul?

Date: 2002-07-17 02:58 pm (UTC)This caused me to snort my iced tea while at work. It was also the direct cause of me having to redo my work on hand sheet...the tea stains didn't work with my overall presentation. :-)
She feels that tattooed people are trash. She's not the first person to hold that opinion, and she won't be the last. I just love how she presents her views like she's The Authority On The Topic.

Date: 2002-07-17 06:15 am (UTC)Sadly, the vibrator too is lost on these people. If in some alternate universe they would actually engage in a conversation about vibrators with another person, they would blush and then stare wide-eyed and say, "I just don't understand what you do with it."
Uh. Huh.
'Nuff said.

Self-gratification is your friend, people.

To me tattoos make one an individual...just felt like sharing that:)
Amen!
If everyone looked the same, it would be pretty damn boring.
I've also noticed a sexist slant to this whole theme...it's okay for one of the vice presidents at work to have a tattoo that covers half of his forearm, but it's not okay for me to have one on my upper arm?
Yeah, they can all kiss my ass. :-)
