Aug. 25th, 2003 07:41 amAfter a few trips to my friendly local ER, TWENTY different vials of blood, and two weeks leave from work, it has been determined that I have ... Mono! And as a complication to the mono, I have also developed a case of hepatitis.
From the National Center for Infectious Diseases:
Epstein-Barr Virus and Infectious Mononucleosis
Epstein-Barr virus, frequently referred to as EBV, is a member of the herpesvirus family and one of the most common human viruses. The virus occurs worldwide, and most people become infected with EBV sometime during their lives.
Check.
When infection with EBV occurs ... it causes infectious mononucleosis 35% to 50% of the time.
Check.
Symptoms of infectious mononucleosis are fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph glands.
Check.
Sometimes, a swollen spleen or liver involvement may develop.
Check.

I can honestly say that I have never had a throat so swollen in my entire life. Nor have I had glands swollen to the size of golf balls.
But my main nemesis is the fatigue that causes me to sleep constantly.

duh! advice
Date: 2003-08-25 03:49 pm (UTC)sis had mon and dropped all her classes immediately--slept as much as possible and sat around when she wasn't sleeping. sis was better in less than a month. no chronic recurrence.
grad school friend with mono stayed in her classes--just got extra sleep and many extensions. a full YEAR later she was still tired all the time, and still not able to function normally.
take good care of yourself early on. don't try to push yourself! take the semester off and read fanfic if you can get away with it.
markey

Date: 2003-08-27 08:56 pm (UTC)I've found that's ALL that I can do. I was up for a whole five hours straight today. It was a milestone. :-)

I'm years past having to worry about semesters ;->, but I haven't been to work for a few weeks. Which is hell on my checkbook, but I do NOT want to deal with this bullshit for the rest of the year.
Hence, rest.
