After a few trips to my friendly local ER, TWENTY different vials of blood, and two weeks leave from work, it has been determined that I have ... Mono! And as a complication to the mono, I have also developed a case of hepatitis.

From the National Center for Infectious Diseases:

Epstein-Barr Virus and Infectious Mononucleosis

Epstein-Barr virus, frequently referred to as EBV, is a member of the herpesvirus family and one of the most common human viruses. The virus occurs worldwide, and most people become infected with EBV sometime during their lives.

Check.

When infection with EBV occurs ... it causes infectious mononucleosis 35% to 50% of the time.

Check.

Symptoms of infectious mononucleosis are fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph glands.

Check.

Sometimes, a swollen spleen or liver involvement may develop.

Check.

Full text of the article can be found here.

I can honestly say that I have never had a throat so swollen in my entire life. Nor have I had glands swollen to the size of golf balls.

But my main nemesis is the fatigue that causes me to sleep constantly.

*hugs*

and *ouch*

I had mono last year. Not. Fun. My glands were the size of golf balls, too.

Hope you start feeling better soon, hon.

Glory be, a diagnosis!

At least now you know what version of the plague you have. Let's just hope that nothing is chronic and that in a few months you'll be back to normal. Or what passes for normal where you're concerned. If you're coherent and bored, you can email or call me, since this is my last week at home.

Btw, those fuckers at Amazon decided not to ship your stuff until today, even though it all was supposed to be able to ship in 24 hours. Fuckers.
Feel better, babe.

Ditto to what Lynn said about at least you know now. Makes you wonder why it takes doctors so damn long to figure something out, though. Get plenty of rest, take whatever meds they give you, and I hope it goes away soon!

Hugs.

sleep more than you think you need to.

sis had mon and dropped all her classes immediately--slept as much as possible and sat around when she wasn't sleeping. sis was better in less than a month. no chronic recurrence.

grad school friend with mono stayed in her classes--just got extra sleep and many extensions. a full YEAR later she was still tired all the time, and still not able to function normally.

take good care of yourself early on. don't try to push yourself! take the semester off and read fanfic if you can get away with it.

Thanks, sweets.

After we went through all the tests and whatnot, my doctor said with a laugh, "Aren't you a little old for mono?"

I wanted to throw something at her. ::grin::

As for my throat, I didn't know my tonsils could swell enough so that they could touch. Go figure.

I actually feel pretty good right now, aside from the throat.

Of course, now Jim is feeling the onset of it. I keep hearing, "But....I'm 52! I shouldn't be able to get mono!"

My germs do not discriminate, dude. :-)

In my case, the first monospot test they gave me came up negative because it didn't test for the proper antibodies. So when they did the comprehensive test, it showed.

And for the record, I am so fucking bored I actually miss work.

SHOOT ME.

sleep more than you think you need to.

I've found that's ALL that I can do. I was up for a whole five hours straight today. It was a milestone. :-)

I'm years past having to worry about semesters ;->, but I haven't been to work for a few weeks. Which is hell on my checkbook, but I do NOT want to deal with this bullshit for the rest of the year.

Hence, rest.

hee. I just assume that everyone online is between 19 and 23 unless I hear otherwise. also, I am like dinosaurs and I am still in school.

bummer that you have to worry about $$. it's a shame when you can't even feel close to death without having to consult your checkbook...

Hey Lex,

I was going through LJ (friends of friends and all that, which only shows how bored I am!) and I clicked in your site and then in about. This post came out. I only wanted to wish you a quick recovery.

Hope you're feeling better.
